Innovation in Agriculture: New Technologies Adopted.

We embrace innovative farming practices, including advanced technologies, that enhance efficiency and promote sustainability in agriculture.

Our family farm is dedicated to doing regenerative, no-till farming with no pesticides used. We are focused on developing and using the best genetics with our amazing soil microbiome. We study the intricate soil food web and the micro-communication between plant exudates, animals, and soil biota during the process of quorum sensing/quenching. We practice dry-farming which has resulted in excellent avocado, mango, starfruit and other crops. Through the use of cover crops, trap plants, natural pollinators and other beneficial insects we work with nature not against it.

Organic A2/A2 Milk

A2/A2 milk comes from cows that produce only the A2 beta-casein protein, which is the same protein found in human milk.

Beta-casein is a protein that makes up 30% of milk protein and comes in two forms: A1 and A2. Most commercially available cow's milk is a mixture of both A1 and A2 beta-casein (A2/A1). However, Maui Mini-Jersey Cows have been bred for, and have been genetically tested, to produce only A2/A2 milk.

What is Agroforestry?

Agroforestry is the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems to create environmental, economic, and social benefits. It has been practiced in the United States and around the world for centuries. We currently use our land to grow a variety of food producing trees and shrubs. However, in addition to our existing mature avocado, mango, and starfruit trees we will add others such as breadfruit (ulu), mamaki (a Hawaiian tea), and hazelnut. We will add native nitrogen fixers such as koa and do alley cropping of cover and food crops.

Why an Agroforest on Maui?

On August 8, 2023, a fire destroyed the town of Lahāina. On the same day, the Kula fire burned an estimated 202 acres and consumed 21 homes in Kula. Our family farm was within walking distance of this fire and embers were dropping on the farm.  Fortunately, our farm did not catch fire. Unfortunately, wild fires Upcounty are not a rare event although this one was by far the worst.  Therefore, we plan to have our windbreaks, and our property serve as a green buffer to protect against risks of future fires by using water-rich, fire-resistant native species such as those in our windbreak.

What Role Does Agroforestry Play on Our Family Farm?

Our family has experience in agroforesty having completed a multi-story cropping agroforestry project with pre-canoe Native Hawai`ian trees and shrubs with support from USDA NRCS and Olinda-Kula Soil and Water Conservation District. Together, we planted over 1800 endemic Native Hawai`ian trees on 3.3 acres on a previous 9 acre farm.

Kula Organic A-2 (KOA) Micro-dairy

KOA is the Hawai`ian word for warrior.

A2/A2 milk comes from cows that produce only the A2 beta-casein protein, which is the same protein found in human milk.

Why a Micro-dairy on Maui?

According to the Honolulu Civic Beat, “there used to be 160 dairies in Hawaii. Only two remain, and one plans to close, meaning Hawaii could end up importing all its milk.”
